A Day no Pigs would Die

Everyone has to grow up eventually. Some people grow up faster than others and can handle responsibilities better that some people. But no one can handle being an adult at the age of 13. That is exactly what Rob had to do in the book A Day No Pigs Would Die. Rob had to be very strong to do what he did. Showing that anyone who grows fast can be great.

My Grandma

Its easy to tell when she is around since the sweet smell of honeysuckle drifts by. Her voice has mellowed with years and is now soft and smooth. she looks surprisingly young for her age. My grandma thinks of others before herself, making her the sweetest, nicest woman alive.

Since my grandma has many great characteristics it is fun to visit her. She is nice like most grandmas. Every time I see her she seems happy. She is so much fun especially since she can do things other grandma's can't.

Even though I'm younger than my grandma she can beat me at some sports. Every time we go golfing she wins by several strokes. She often likes to go swimming and takes the grandchildren with her. She likes to play cards with the family and often wins.

One of the most important things about my grandma is the area she lives in and the people who are around her. She is always close to the family and can visit often. She is very involved in her church and does many things there like teaching Sunday school and sings in the choir. She lives in a very mountainous area in the northern part of Kentucky.

It's nice to have a sweet grandma who is happy to see her grandchildren. It's also wonderful to see someone who is active in sports so late in life. Many grandmas are not able to be close to their families but she is even though she lives in a mountainous state. My grandma thinks of others before herself making her the sweetest, nicest woman alive.

Doris Miller

The call to action, some hear it more than others. but the ones who listen are few. Doris Miller was just a cook onboard the USS West Virginia. During the bombing of Pearl Harbor he usd a 50 caliber AA gun to fight off the Japanese aircraft. That is why Doris Miller is an all American hero.

Doris Miller was just a simple cook on board the USS West Virginia who hadn't even been trained in how to use a mounted weapon. He was the heavyweight boxing champion onboard the ship he was serving on because of his physical strength and abilities. During the attack and after finding that his battle station was destroyed, he was ordered to pull wounded men away from battle. This is what made him go up on deck to see how he could help. He ws sent to get the captain who he discovered was mortally wounded. After finding this he manned a Browning fifty caliber anti-aircraft gun.

Most people in the military have to go through basic training and years of work to do what Doris did. With little to no training in combat, no one expected Doris to do what he did. During the attack Doris shot down at least one Japanese plane. He used the Browning machine gun for about fifteen minutes until he ran out of ammo and was forced to abandon ship. He might have saved lives by doing what he did and helped to keep the Japanese at bay. He was a great man to say the least.

For his bravery he received many awards. Among them were the Navy Cross, The Purple Heart Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Clasp, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Most of these are only awarded to men and women who risk all. These are not awarded to just anyone, you have to attain a great victory to get these awards.

All in all Doris Miller is an amazing man and many even call him a hero. He has obtained many great awards and medals and will always be remembered. Many people like him are in the military today. Everyone has the potential to be great but the one who use it are greater.

The Pearl

People change the way they act and feel almost every day. Some are for the better but some are not so good. In the book "The Pearl" Kino changes considerably because of the pearls immense power. Nothing good can come from sudden great power.

Kino was just a simple pearl farmer who lived in an impoverished part of the world. He had a little family of three and lots friends around him. A very happy life style for him. His family lived on a stick house on the beach with little shelter from weather. Juana Kino's wife was a proud mother of her son Coyotito. They lived a very hard life and had no help from others outside of their small village. Evan though the town could help the people easily. Family was all Kino needed to be happy, Until Kino found the pearl.

The pearl was enormous it was said that the pearl was the size of a gulls egg. That is about the size of a golfball or maybe bigger. The pearl was called"The Pearl of the World" because of it's great size. The name was rather fitting for the pearl. However with the pearl came power, a power that Kino could not control.
